An alpine day hike builds forever memories
Hiking builds character. Plain and simple. And character-building makes memories. Here's a chance to do both in a hike to Crater Lakes. Our family recently made this nine-mile trip. Follow these tips to the trail and enjoy a satisfying day.
Begin with the End in Mind
Here’s the end: a pair of alpine lakes set like jewels high in the flanks of the Eastern Cascades. If you like to fish, pack the rod. If you like to take icy swims, pack a bathing suit (or not). And if you like to snooze, take a small pad to stretch out on next to the lake. #BestNapEver.

The Basics
Crater Lakes are located high in the mountains between the Lake Chelan and Methow River valleys. The Washington Trails Association offers great directions to the trailhead and descriptions of the hike.
Our family left the Walmart parking lot in Chelan at 7:15 am. By 8:30 am we were hiking and by a bit past 11:30 we had made it into the lake.
Wondering if you have what it takes to make it the full 9 miles? You will need to be in shape. But know that my eight-year-old daughter and her best friend did the round trip with minimal whining. And at the head of the line, Grandpa Evans, age 74, also made the loop.
So, if you are in decent shape, hit the trail. Rugged peaks and the delicate green needles of Larch trees await.
Preparation
A pair of good sturdy hiking boots will serve you well on the trail. I’ve also hiked in running shoes. Just be mindful of your footsteps. No one wants a sprained ankle four-miles from the car.
Yes, you will encounter mosquitos. Bring repellant or wear long sleeves. And regarding long sleeves, pack a light jacket and a long-sleeve shirt. It seems ludicrous to pack layers when the temperature in town crests 90. But trust me on this one. The air is cooler at 7000’.
Finally, bring at least a liter of water per person. More doesn’t hurt. Pack a lunch to enjoy along the way. And don’t forget plenty of your favorite trail snacks. You’ll want a good balance of carbs, proteins, and fats. Here’s a home-made mix I recently assembled at the Red Apple Chelan Market:
Raisins
Roasted, Salted Almonds
Peanut M&Ms
Shredded Coconut
(This mix was a bit light on the carbs. Consider adding some granola or some of your favorite cereal.)
All of this goes in the knapsack along with a mini first-aid kit (I carry just the basics on a day hike). Don’t forget some toilet paper for nature’s call. And if you want to relax your feet in luxury at the lake, pack a pair of flip-flops or sandals.
Rounding the Turn
We left the lake at 2:30 pm and arrived at the cars at 4:30 pm. A relaxing stop for dinner and drinks at Howards in Pateros has become a part of our post-hike ritual.
My daughter’s friend, out on a hike for the first time, later told her mom, “I’m so glad I decided to go … I won’t ever forget this day.”
Nor will you. Time to lace up.
